Selection of plants
Selecting and arranging trees and shrubs is perhaps the most critical step in establishing a shelterbelt. The ultimate goal is to select tree and shrub species that are well adapted to the environmental conditions of the location and apt to provide the needed protection.

A total of 26 tree species and 23 shrub species, known for their ability to perform well in shelterbelts, are presented in detail along with information on various planting designs. A selection of case studies from eastern Canada, each with their own characteristics, is also presented.
